For over a century, Storvik has played a pivotal role in the development of Sunndal as an industrial powerhouse, symbolizing the modernization of Norwegian society throughout the 20th century. From Nils Storvik’s foundational smithy to today’s extensive operations, the company’s history has been marked by innovation, expansion, and a remarkable, yet often overlooked, contribution from women.
Historically, women have played crucial roles in the growth and success of Storvik, leaving lasting marks on the company. From Brit Sande, the heir to the Sande farm who contributed to the founding alongside Nils Storvik, to Liv Ramsøy Sande, whose trade certificate laid the administrative foundation for the business, and Margit, who managed the company’s books with a steady hand. The contributions of these women underscore the importance of recognizing and valuing female effort in all aspects of business.
In conjunction with International Women’s Day, we reflect on Storvik’s ongoing journey towards gender balance and inclusion. With a leadership now composed of 50% women, Storvik demonstrates a commitment to equality that extends far beyond mere statistics. It is a deliberate strategy that recognizes the strength in diversity and the unique value that women bring to the table, especially in a traditionally male-dominated industry. At Storvik, the most qualified person gets the job, regardless of gender.
Awareness around gender balance and inclusion is not just a matter of fairness; it’s a strategic advantage. Women bring new perspectives, ideas, and solutions that can drive innovation and improve decision-making processes. By actively working to include more women in all aspects of the business, Storvik takes significant steps towards a more inclusive and sustainable work environment.
However, this transition is not without challenges. Raising awareness about unconscious biases, building a culture that values diversity, and creating an inclusive atmosphere requires continuous effort and commitment. Storvik’s annual celebration of Women’s Day with a special lunch for all female employees is an example of how the company is building a culture that celebrates and supports women. This is the third year we have implemented this tradition, and it stands as a symbol of our commitment to equality and recognition of women’s invaluable contributions to our collective success.
Moving forward, we must continue to challenge the status quo, break down barriers, and build bridges for equal opportunities. Let’s work together towards a future where gender no longer defines our capacity to contribute, lead, and innovate. Through awareness, inclusion, and action, we can create a workplace—and a society—where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
